It is a complex mental function having four distinct phases: (1) memorizing or learning, (2) retention, (3) recall, and (4) recognition. Clinically, it is usually subdivided into immediate, recent and remote memory. “Your memory…it is the center of your life, it is everything you hear, everything you see, everything you feel, it is everything you are.” I believe there are countless ingredients that make up our memory, like all the different components that make me, as an individual with my own personality. My face and voice distinguish myself from others. I carry a sense of my own body, yet my thoughts and memories and unique only to me. Each of those ingredients is one small part/element that makes up the whole of myself. I collect information to use in my own way. All of that blends together to create a mixture that forms myself and gives rise to my conscience. But what if I happen to lose my memory or become affected by amnesia or age? If I lose my memory information, how would I prove who I am? All that I have in this life may turn out to mean nothing to me…and this is my concern. I consciously select elements/ingredients for my artwork that surround me in my everyday world.
